Job Opening #2 in NYC (Second Notice)



The Center for Jewish History is accepting applications for a Processing
Archivist (Temporary) to work on a project funded by the National Historical
Publications & Records Commission (NHPRC).  This is a short-term position
that can be filled on either a full-time or a part-time basis.  The work
will be done between February-December 2002 and will equal four months of
full-time employment.

Project:  The Center for Jewish History, a consortium of five Partners with
archival, library and museum collections, has an NHPRC grant to arrange and
describe collections relating to the history and culture of the Jewish
people.

Review of applications will begin on January 11, 2002.

Duties:  Will arrange and describe Yiddish-language archival collections and
will revise and translate existing finding aids from Yiddish to English.
Will assist in creation of cataloging worksheets, basic preservation work,
and assignment of access points for the collections. This position reports
to Chief Archivist and Project Director of the Center.

Required Qualifications: Masters degree in Judaic studies, history, library
science or other appropriate field.  Ability to read and summarize Yiddish
language manuscripts.  Must be organized and able to work accurately.   Must
have word processing skills as well as good writing and verbal skills.

Desirable Qualifications: One-year experience working in an archives or
library or experience doing research in archival collections.  Familiarity
with other languages (such as Hebrew, German, Russian, or Polish) frequently
found in the collections.  Familiarity with the MARC format, Encoded
Archival Description, XSL, XmetaL and Microsoft Access and/or other database
management software are a plus

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.
