SAA in 1937

I've stumbled upon a March 12, 1937 letter on the letterhead
of A. R. Newsome, President, University of North Carolina,
Chapel Hill, but coming from Philip C. Brooks, Secretary,
Society of American Archivists. The letter signed by him
is urging a local Pensacola person to join the "new" Society
of American Archivists, organized in December 1936. The
letter, setting forth the benefits of membership, notes that
the Society has 125 members and the additional forms
note that dues are $5.00 per year!

Further, if you will apply to the Board for membership,
you can be considered a "founding" member if you are
elected to membership before the first annual meeting.

A reprint of the membership section states that you can
be dropped for nonpayment by "vote of the Council one
month after notice of such default shall have been mailed
to him. He shall be restored to membership..." (upon
payment of dues. I find it interesting that the "he" pronoun
is used here, encouraging the belief that only men can be
archivists...yet Brooks' letter notes that Margaret C. Norton
(of Illinois) is the Society's Vice-President!

Isn't 2002 the Society's 65th meeting anniversary?
