How many Dominoes should there be in a complete Civil War set?

Dear Colleagues:
Sometimes being a museum archivist sends you down strange paths. Our
curator of collections found a box of dominoes, proported to have been used
by soldiers during the Civil War. There are some blank spaces in the box.
My question is this...how many dominoes would there have been in a
soldier's domino box?
We don't have a copy of Hoyle at the office, so we have no reference.
        Please help.
