Re: Scrapbook Reformatting...

Alan:
I would unbind the scrapbooks and store them in flat acid free boxes with
tissue paper (acid free) sheets between each page. You can number or
renumber your pages and make a finding aid that will direct the staff
member or patron to the appropriate page. Still the best solution is to have
each book microfilmed. The film is so much easier to use and you save all of
that stress upon the scrapbook when it is used. We are most fortunate to
have our own in house microfilming program here at the Arkansas Archives.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Scrapbook Reformatting...

Dear Archives Listserv,

Thank you very much for reading, and in advance for your help! I
am sure this question has been asked before, but please indulge me if it
has. I was asked about the potential of reformatting several scrapbooks
featuring old newspaper clippings into a smaller and easier to handle form
without the everpresent danger of crumbling newsprint and unglued articles.
Outside of professionally microfilming these books page by page, or
photocopying, scanning and placing on a CD-ROM (if this is possible?) at
the extreme I am hard pressed to find another viable solution to this
question. Any help on the best ways and options to go about making this
project a success would be most appreciated. Thank you once again!

Sincerely,
