Project Archivist. Union Theological Seminary. New York,

Project Archivist. Union Theological Seminary, Burke Library, New
York, NY.

The Burke Library is seeking an experienced processing archivist,
ideally with a background in religion and/or theology and/or a
specialization in women's studies, to process the papers of the
Archives of Women in Theological Scholarship (AWTS). The
AWTS is a documentation strategy project funded by the Lilly
Endowment to provide access to the scholarly
and personal papers of prominent women who have reshaped the
disciplines of theological education and influenced the course of
American religious life over the past thirty years. The collections
for the project, which is in its second year of operation, will be
actively surveyed and accessioned throughout the entire grant
period. The collections of the AWTS will provide unprecedented
insight into a time in American religious history when women
scholars began to have a significant impact on the academy, the
church, and society. Together, they form a critical and unique
segment of the broader intellectual history of the United States and
are of value not only to the study of theology and religion, but to
future research in a broad range of humanities and social science
disciplines.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Archivist/Project
Director, the Project Archivist will manage the appraisal,
arrangement and description of the AWTS records. The Project
Archivist will prepare draft finding aids and MARC:amc worksheets
for each collection which s/he will transfer, with the assistance of
the Technical Services Department and the Seminary Webmaster,
to the Library's on-line catalogue (SOPHIA) and to RLIN. S/he will
work with the Seminary's Webmaster to prepare EAD format
finding aids and to post them to the Seminary and AWTS WWW
sites, respectively. As time permits, the PA may provide reference
services for the collections; write articles about the collections for
placement in archival, historical, or theological journals; and work
with the Project Director to publicize the collections at meetings
and conferences.

Requirements: A master's degree in history, library science or a
related field is required, as is experience in processing and
cataloging extensive archival collections. Familiarity with the
MARC:amc and EAD formats in archival cataloguing is strongly
preferred, as is scholarly familiarity with 20th century Christian
feminism.

Hours and rates of pay: This is a term position. It is full-time, 35
hours per week, and temporary, expected to last for three years.
Health benefits are available, and there is a four- week vacation.
The salary is $35,000.
