Re: Article in Chronicle of Higher Ed

I zapped the first msg on this...Obviously the lady is uphappy and
disappointed. Obviously she made numerous choices (marriage, reloc, etc.,
etc.,) and chose to apply for the 'job' she now has for the reasons she
gave. I have given numerous career talks to inner city and urban youth and
one thing I emphasize is marketability of a profession. Simply getting a PhD
(aka post-hole digger) degree does not automatically elevate one or entitle
one to those esteemed academic tenured positions. I don't know for sure how
marketable a PhD is in the major she chose, but I know in the library
profession getting a PhD is very limiting in employment prospects. Most of
the jobs in this profession call for a masters level. Let's face it, life
isn't always what we want it to be. I get the impression she may not be in a
major metropolitan area... Anyway, I suspect she might be unhappy about
other things as well, and that is her problem. She needs to accept
responsibility for choices made. Maybe she could find a job flipping
burgers....

Daniel:

I haven't read the article yet but what a great letter! I certainly hope
that the Chronicle will print it. Faculty will never encourage talented
students toward the archival profession if they think it's just an
unimportant second class desk job for faculty wanna-be's. We don't need
that and it seems that an educated person such as Ms. Young would recognize
the importance of archives but clearly that's not the case. Ms. Young
should look for another job if she feels her current position is beneath
her.
