The Special Collections Department at Stony Brook University specializes in
the history of the Long Island region. The department contains political
and community records and also documents from local, regional and national
environmental issues and activities. Senator Jacob K. Javits donated his
papers in 1981. The department also houses the William Butler Yeats
microfilmed manuscripts collection. New initiatives include the AIDC
collection pertaining to the development of the barcode industry and the
Italian American collection. A description of the Special Collections

Project Archivist
The Library invites applications for the Environmental Defense Collection.
Stony Brook University is the official repository for Environmental Defense
(formerly Environmental Defense Fund.) The project archivist is
responsible for managing and processing this collection according to
archival standards and procedures. Responsibilities include preparing
inventories and writing finding aids; developing the collection;
identifying items needing preservation treatment; developing publicity,
project publications, and exhibitions relating to the archives. Reports to
the University Archivist. This is a non-tenure track position with a term
appointment, renewable up to five years. Flexible hours and schedule.
Required qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS or Master's in Archival
Studies; knowledge of archival policies, procedures and archival
cataloging; demonstrated familiarity with word processing and database
packages; ability to perform physical activities associated with archival
environments.
Desired qualifications: One or more years of experience appraising,
arranging and describing archival records; experience with automated
bibliographic systems, including MARC-AMC.
Full-time salary: $40,000-42,000, dependent upon qualifications - incumbent
may choose to work less than full-time. Applications will be accepted
