Re: "Jeans" schools

Colleagues:
I just had a patron call for information about his mother, who was a Black
school teacher in rural Arkansas during the 1930s. He says she was the
supervisor of the "Jeans" schools or the "Jeans" program in Black schools.
However, he did not know what the term "Jeans" (sic) meant. I did not
either. Anyone out there who can help my me and my patron with this term?
Thanks.

Probably the "Jeanes Fund" named after Anna T. Jeans (18222-1907), a
Quaker from Philadelphia, who established the "Negro School Fund,
Anna T. Jeans Foundation" incorporated in 1907, with James H.
Dillard, President and Director, and Booker T. Washington, Chairman
of the Executive Committee.
