SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND ARCHIVES CATALOGER

The Libraries of the University of California, Irvine invite applications for the position of Special Collections and Archives Cataloger in the Department of Special Collections and Archives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Head, Special Collections and Archives, with a secondary reporting relationship to the Head, Catalog Department, the Special Collections and Archives Cataloger catalogs rare books and other special collections monographs, archival and manuscript collections, and materials in other formats, following both national standards and local and network policies appropriate to the materials.  Catalogs on OCLC and UCI's Innopac integrated online system using AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, and appropriate special collections cataloging rules and tools.

Has lead responsibility for formulating and implementing departmental cataloging and technical services policies, procedures, and workflow, emphasizing the importance of providing effective access to a diverse array of collection materials.  Trains and supervises cataloging assistants.  Keeps abreast of new developments in cataloging, with emphasis on trends and practices in cataloging of rare books and special collections, archival materials, and digital metadata.  Serves as departmental liaison to the Catalog Department and works actively to ensure Special Collections and Archives conformance with all appropriate policies.  Shares in librarywide cataloging policy decision making as a member of the Catalog Department Management Team.

Serves on the Department's reference desk on a rotational basis.  Depending on the successful candidate's interests and expertise and on departmental needs and priorities, opportunities may exist to assume responsibility for management of archival processing, to play a role in digitization projects, and/or to participate in the instructional and exhibit programs.

Qualifications

Required:
*  A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
*  Recent monographic cataloging experience, including experience using a bibliographic utility and an
    integrated library system.
*  Knowledge of and working experience with AACR2rev, LCRIs, LCSH, Library of Congress
    Classification, and MARC.
*  Awareness of and commitment to national and international cataloging standards, including those
    pertaining to special collections materials.
*  Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately in a production-oriented environment.
*  Demonstrated strength in written, verbal, analytical, and  interpersonal skills.
*  Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, flexibly, and independently within a culturally diverse
    academic community.
*  Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion of librarians.

Preferred:
*  Reading knowledge of at least one modern Western language; Latin, French, or Spanish.
*  Formal coursework or training in rare books, descriptive bibliography, special collections
    librarianship, and/or archives.
*  Experience cataloging rare books and/or other special collections materials using Descriptive
    Cataloging of Rare Books and relevant specialized thesauri such as ACRL's Genre Terms and the
    Art and Architecture Thesaurus.
*  Experience cataloging archival materials using Archives, Personal Papers and Manuscripts.
*  Demonstrated awareness of new and emerging standards and technologies relevant to bibliographic
    control and metadata, and a commitment to their effective application.
*  Experience using OCLC and Innopac.
*  Ability to train and supervise cataloging assistants.
*  Experience providing reference service in a research or academic library.

Preference will be given to excellent qualified librarians with less than five years post-MLS experience.

The Special Collections and Archives Department

The Special Collections and Archives Department houses the UCI Libraries' collections of rare books, notable subject collections, manuscript collections, University Archives, and the Southeast Asian Archive.  The collections (80,000 volumes and 3,500 linear feet of archival collections) broadly support study and research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.  A significant percentage of holdings date from the 19th and 20th centuries.  Active collecting areas of particular emphasis and distinction include California and regional history, dance and the performing arts, critical theory and its antecedents, and papers of distinguished UCI faculty.  The Department is committed to proactive service to UCI students and faculty, as well as to the broader scholarly community, through its collecting, public service, instructional, and exhibit programs.  The staff includes 6 librarians, 3 library assistants, graduate interns and student assistants.

The Libraries

The UCI Libraries are in a major period of growth and consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library.  The Main Library primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  The Science Library primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and Computer Science.  The Medical Center Library serves the UCI Medical Center, located in Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries have a staff of 306 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments.  The library collection consists of over 2.2 million volumes and 25,000 current serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively expanding electronic resources collection of over 9,000 titles.  The UCI Libraries are a member of the: Association of Research Libraries (ARL), California Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information (CNI), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).

University of California, Irvine

One of ten University of California campuses, the University of California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,500 acres of coastal foothills, five miles from the Pacific Ocean, between San Diego and Los Angeles.  The present enrollment is 21,885 students with a faculty of approximately 1,110.  The current student population numbers 17,865 undergraduates and 4,020 graduate students including 1,095 health sciences students.  Ethnic/minority students represent about 60% of the student body.  Student enrollment is expected to reach 30,000 by 2010 accompanied by a proportional growth in faculty.  The University offers 38 doctoral programs in addition to the M.D.  UCI is ranked nationally in the top universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top ten.  UCI is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment.  Librarians are periodically subject to administrative and peer review for merit increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside the Library;  3) university and public service; and 4) research and other creative activity.  They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.

Salary:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of Assistant
Librarian I ? Associate Librarian IV  ($37,920 - $52,620).
