THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library, with one of the world?s largest buildings devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts, is Yale's principal repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The Beinecke collections are internationally known and heavily used by scholars from around the world. In addition to its distinguished general collections, the Beinecke Library houses outstanding special collections devoted to American literature, German literature, Western Americana, and the Osborn Collection, noted for its British literary and historical manuscripts. The Manuscript Unit is the technical services unit responsible for accessioning, processing, cataloging, and conservation and preservation of the Beinecke's manuscript, archival and non-print collections, including photographs, works of art on paper, audio recordings and moving image formats. The staff consists of the Unit Head, 6 FTE Archivists, 3 FTE Archives Assistants, student assistants, and special project personnel.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Manuscript Unit Head, processes and catalogs manuscript and archival collections in the field of American and modern European history and the humanities, from the 18th through the 20th century. Assist in the preservation assessment of collections and in selection of materials for conservation treatment. Assist in the selection and preparation of collection material for digital conversion for preservation and access. Prepare and maintain electronic finding aids according to established local practice, including EAD encoding. Perform original cataloging in the MARC format. May also assist with selection of material and planning for exhibitions. Special projects as assigned. Plan, direct, and review the work of processing assistants and student assistants. Assist in the ongoing development of the unit?s processing and cataloging practice for historical and humanities collections. Participate in library-wide planning and committee activities, and is expected to be active professionally.  Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

QUALIFICATIONS
MLS or equivalent ALA-accredited degree, with formal training in archival theory and practice. Two years of relevant professional experience required for appointment at Librarian II rank. Strong knowledge of American or modern European history or literature, and broad knowledge in the humanities, as demonstrated through academic degrees or an equivalent combination of training or experience. Good reading knowledge of at least one modern European language. Familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections.  Preferred: Graduate level training in American or European history; specific knowledge in the areas of Western Americana and/or 18th-19th century US or European history. 
Experience processing and cataloging historical manuscripts or archival collections.
Reading knowledge of Spanish or French.

Familiarity with the MARC format, LCSH, AACR2, Hensen's APPM, or other LC cataloging standards. Familiarity with EAD (Encoded Archival Description). Familiarity with automated library information management systems, such as Endeavor/Voyager or RLIN. Experience working with microcomputers and basic software applications in a Windows environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a production oriented, team environment.  To be appointed as Librarian II must have minimum of two years of relevant experience and achievement, thorough knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, and Library of Congress subject analysis practice.
