The case for open records
Prosecutors' reports should be streamlined, accessible
posted 02/17/02
The Legislature should take seriously Earl Moreland's complaints that he and other Florida prosecutors are required to fill out time-consuming reports that few people bother to read. But instead of granting his request to drop the mandate, lawmakers should look for a way to make the reporting more efficient and accessible.

U.S. Tightening Rules on Keeping Scientific Secrets
By WILLIAM J. BROAD
The Bush administration is taking wide measures to tighten scientific secrecy in
the hope of keeping weapons of mass destruction out of unfriendly hands.
Last month, it began quietly withdrawing from public release more than 6,600 technical
documents that deal mainly with the production of germ and chemical weapons. It is also drafting a new information security policy, to be released in the next few weeks, that officials say will result in more documents' being withdrawn. It is asking scientific societies to limit what they publish in research reports.

wrapping up a war of his own.
The Rocklin Republican dropped into the Congressional Record 110 pages of subpoenaed
government documents.
Banking regulators had strenuously warned that, if released, the documents could cripple their chance of recovering taxpayer money after the $1.6 billion collapse of a Texas savings and loan.
