Sen. Leahy Asks GAO to Investigate FOIA Matters



LEAHY ASKS GAO TO INVESTIGATE E-FOIA MATTERS

The Senate Judiciary Committee has sent a strongly worded
letter to the General Accounting Office seeking an inquiry into
how well the provisions of the Electronic Freedom of Information Act
Amendments are being carried out properly by federal agencies,
and whether agencies are accepting requests electronically as
anticipated under the statute.

The Feb. 28 letter, signed by the Committee Chairman, Senator
Leahy, also asks GAO to evaluate how the Ashcroft FOIA
Memorandum, which explicitly superceded the Reno
Memorandum, has affected FOIA Implementation.

The letter also asks GAO to look into whether agencies are
properly categorizing newsmedia requesters and properly
granting fee waivers.
