Nenana Ice Classic

Since I know some of you are interested, here is the info:

The tripod was erected on the Tanana River on Sunday, March 3rd, kicking
off the 86th Annual Nenana Ice Classic. The tradition began in 1917 when
bored railroad engineers decided to place bets as to when the ice would
break up on the river at Nenana, AK. In the past, the ice has gone out as
early as April 20 (1940 & 1998) and as late as May 20 (1964). Entrants
must guess exact date & time (to the minute). Lottery tickets are $2, and
last year's winners split $308,000. ttfn - Jill.

or you can go to <www.newsminer.com> and search the archives using "Nenana
tripod" to get the article from Monday's Fairbanks paper - the URL is
prohibitively long to post here.
