Chabot: persistent watchdog
WASHINGTON - The tug-of-war that started last summer between Ohio
Congressman Steve Chabot and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is still
going strong.
The Cincinnati Republican recently fired off an eight-page letter to the
commission in which he demanded to know whether the agency has been shredding
documents that he says should be preserved under federal law.

U.S. keeps spy ink a secret
BY MURRAY DUBIN
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
WASHINGTON -- Is a secret, 85-year-old formula for invisible ink an important
tool in our war on terrorism?
Apparently, the Central Intelligence Agency thinks so. It has persuaded a
federal judge to keep secret classified documents describing World War I-era
formulas for invisible ink.

A history lesson for historian
Archivist refutes claims of prizewinning author
Sam McManis
Martinez -- Don't let her lilting voice and prim, schoolmarmish demeanor fool
you. You mess with Betty Maffei, you dis her volunteer staff at Contra Costa
Historical Society, you have the temerity to cast aspersions on their filing
acumen, and you're in for a
world of hurt, my friend.

Couple set up forger's factory for immigrants
By Tim Reid
A PRINTER and his wife turned their home into a highly sophisticated forger’s
workshop that produced tens of thousands of bogus birth certificates,
academic qualifications and driving licences for illegal immigrants.
When police raided the house at Thamesmead, southeast London, they discovered
computers and specialised equipment in an upstairs room which gave Bais
Sulaiman and his wife, Wuroala, the ability to provide almost any kind of
document or plastic card. They also found more than 13,000 forged documents.

HMAS Sydney cover-up alleged

OFFICIAL records of distress signals picked up from HMAS Sydney on the night
she sank were altered in an apparent bid to protect senior Defence officials,
the Western Australian parliament has been told.
Documents tabled in Parliament by Greens MLC Jim Scott included a statement
from retired RAAF flying instructor Eric Cooper, 86, who said he relayed
signals from a ship at sea on November 19, 1941, the night the Sydney sank.
