Re: bleach and mildew

I have had good success using 90% isopropyl alcohol (the kind you get at the
drug store) for molded and mildewed items. This came to me from a highly
respected conservator as a reasonable last-ditch effort to save a book. The
conservator instructed me to lightly (very lightly) dampen a cotton swab,
cotton ball, or cloth, and squeeze until nothing comes out before applying
it to the item. I have managed to get several molded items returned to a
useable state this way. Apparently the alcohol dessicates the spores and
does less damage than Clorox. It will damage some ink and some coloring used
in covers, so test first. It really gets down to having something useable
or something you have to throw away, or something that's safe to keep until
you can afford to have it microfilmed. My two cents' worth--

Ritzenthaler does not recommend any wet solutions.

Anyone asked Mike Betz or Kitty Friesen yet?

I am by no means a conservator, but the idea of using
chlorine, which is what bleach is, makes me nervous. I
mean, figure your average swimming pool might have a
couple of gallons of liquid chlorine (bleach) in a
couple thousand gallons of water. And just look at how
damaging that is, it rots plastic. Is there any
information of the effects of chlorine, even such a
small amount, on paper products?
