Re: Archives and rare books

Renee -

There are some good publications available from the Canadian
Conservation Institute - a series (the 'N11' series) in fact on the
conservation of paper and books. Unfortunately you have to purchase
them...but they are available for sale online at
http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/frameset_e.shtml. Of particular interest is
N11/1 "Making Protective Enclosures for Books and Paper Artifacts",
N11/7 "Basic Care of Books" and N11/8 "Display Methods for Books."

The perspective of these publications is museum-oriented, but they will
be useful nonetheless.

Cheers!

Renee,

The National Park Service Museum Management Program produces short
leaflets
called "Conserv O Grams" about caring for museum objects. Numbers 19/1
through 3 address rare books including care, security, use and handling.

They can be accessed on-line at:
http://www.cr.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/cons_toc.html

Luck,

Robert

Dear List:

Due to retirements and some reshuffling, our Archive has just been given
administration over the Rare Book Collection. Does anyone have any
recommendations for very good sources for collections policies,
de-accessioning
policies (of course I'm fighting not to cut the collection), and
handling
and
maintenance guides?

I've pulled some things off the web and gone through my archival
reference
materials, but want to give them as much special attention as possible.

Thanks for any help

Renee
