SAA PLENARY SESSIONS TO ADDRESS WORLD TRADE CENTER DISASTER, INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY

APRIL 4 - The SAA Annual Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama will feature a
special plenary session on Friday, August 23. Titled "Witness to History:
Archivists and the World Trade Center Disaster," the session will feature
Robert Morris from the National Archives, Gynned Cannan from Trinity Church
Archives, and George Tselos form Ellis Island discussing their experiences
on September 11, 2001. Timothy Tendrup from the University of Alabama
Birmingham Hospital will serve as commentator. This tragedy will pose
immense challenges to the archival community for months and years to come.
Our archival colleagues will reflect on their experiences during the
disaster and the following weeks and months, addressing how it has affected
them as archivists, their archives, and the New York City archival
community. This session will provide a unique opportunity to share a view
of this monumental event from the archival perspective.

The Closing Plenary Session on Saturday, August 24, will feature an address
from Clifford Lynch, Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked
Information (CNI). CNI, with 200 member organizations, addresses the use of
information technology and networked information to enhance scholarship and
intellectual productivity. Lynch, who holds a Ph.D. in computer science
from UC Berkeley, is an adjunct professor at Berkeley's School of
Information Management and Systems. He is past President of the American
Society for Information Science and a fellow of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science and the National Information Standards
Organization. He currently serves on the Internet 2 Applications Council
and the National Digital Preservation Strategy Advisory Board of the Library
of Congress. We was a member of the National Research Council committee
that recently published "The Digital Dilemma: Intellectual Property in the
Information Infrastructure," and now serves on the NRC's committee on
Broadband Last-Mile Technology.
