Re: Two Matters

at serious risk of dating myself here, but weren't those called Flavor Straws,
or more likely, something like "Flav-R-Straws"???

have to say this post really pushed the memory buttons--what a rush! Haven't
thought of those things in years, but now that I have, frankly, the whole
concept sounds a little gross. Perhaps part of the reason you don't see those
things around anymore. But besides that, isn't there some scientific basis for
the idea that most intense memories are those triggered by tastes and smells?
(Think of Proust and the madeleines.) Something about the way the olfactory &
gustatory nerves are wired into the brain....

Foody archivists might recall, or anyone else, for that matter, the sipping
straw product out in the '50's or '60's, that had a flavoring membrane
inside the straw. I think strawberry was a flavor, banana and chocolate. If
anyone can supply the name of the product, please respond. I think there was
a animated giraffe that sipped white milk, that was magically flavored by
this felt-like membrane adhered to the inside of a paper straw. I think the
straws were striped...red for strawberry, brown for chocolate, yellow for
banana. (Excuse me, I'm thirsty now....)
