A new column on archives and an article on managing the Special C ollections/Archives Dept.

Please excuse cross-postings.

Dear Colleague,

The _OCLC Systems & Services_ journal is very pleased to present a new
column, "Archives and Manuscripts," beginning with the first issue of volume
18, which is now available. This column is authored by Dr. Randall
Jimerson, associate professor of History at Western Washington University
(WWU), WA. Dr. Jimerson has been teaching graduate courses in archives,
manuscripts, and record management since 1981 and has served as director of
the Graduate Program in Archives and Records Management at WWU since 1994.
In this year's SAA (Society of American Archivists) annual conference, Dr.
Jimerson was named as a 2001 Fellow, an honor given to educators, scholars,
and archivists who have made valuable contributions to the archival
community.

This column will cover key issues and concepts in the archival profession.
In this and subsequent columns, Dr. Jimerson will focus on fundamentals such
as archival knowledge, provenance and original order, archival description,
appraisal of archives and manuscripts, and reference and access services.
These are basics that librarians, catalogers, and information professionals
should know and understand in order to handle archives and manuscripts
appropriately. He will also explore various other topics such as the impact
of digital technology, the delineation of archival values and ethics,
archival history, and the benefits of records and information management
(RIM).

Dr. Jimerson encourages readers to submit questions and comments to him. He
will be very glad to address them in his column. His e-mail address is
<rand.jimerson@wwu.edu> and his postal address is History Department,
Western Washington University, Bellingham, Washington 98225-9061. I hope
you will enjoy reading this column and find it useful.

Below is the citation for the first installment of his column:

Jimerson, Randall. (2002) "The nature of archives and manuscripts," OCLC
Systems & Services, Vol. 18, No.2, pp: 21-23.
Another article related to Special Collections Management in the digital
world is also included in this issue. It is written by Faye Phillips, the
Associate Dean of Libraries for Special Collections at the Louisiana State
University Libraries (LSU), Baton Rouge, LA. Her article is entitled
"Managing the Special Collections Department in the Digital World: A Case
Study of Cooperation and Innovation." In her article, she describes how
her department has been involved in digital projects internally and
externally. Because members of her staff have served as project team
members for most LSU Digital Library projects, activities such as digital
imaging, reformatting, metadata creation, and other digital processing tasks
have become part of her department's daily routines.

Hope you find these two articles helpful.

_OCLC Systems & Services_ is a refereed quarterly publication with an
