ART April 23rd Meeting

"We're History": Presenting the Borough Historians of New York City
Tuesday April 23rd, 2002

The five borough historians of New York City will participate in a panel
presentation to discuss the unique experiences and research challenges they
have encountered in serving the magnificent and diverse boroughs of New
York City. Topics of urban interest, past, present and future, will be
addressed. The panel will welcome a lively interchange with audience
guests for this unique presentation.

THE BRONX: Lloyd Ultan is author of eight books on the borough and serves
on the board of directors at The Bronx County Historical Society. He is a
history professor on the faculty of Fairleigh Dickinson University and has
been borough historian since 1996.

BROOKLYN: Ron Schweiger, a science teacher, has conducted tours of
Brooklyn's Flatbush, Sheepshead Bay and Brooklyn Bridge for over 20 years
and has given slide shows of the borough's wonders. He was appointed
borough historian January 2002.

MANHATTAN: Celedonia Jones has been a docent at the Museum of the City of
New York for 12 years and worked in the New York City Comptroller's office
before that. He was appointed borough historian in 1997.

QUEENS: Dr. Stanley Cogan holds two historic positions: Queen Borough
Historian and executive director of the Queens Historical Society. He had
been a teacher and principal in elementary schools and was appointed
borough historian in 1999.

STATEN ISLAND: Dick Dickenson, a former urban planner, has written
extensively about Staten Island and is a member of many of the borough's
historical organizations as well as of the Archivists' Round Table. As the
holder of the longest tenure of borough historians, he was appointed in 1991.

MODERATOR: John Manbeck, the former Brooklyn Borough Historian for eight
years, taught as professor of English at Kingsborough Community College and
founded its Kingsborough Historical Society. Mayor Giuliani appointed him
