I've had good luck
personally with the Canon G1 we bought a year ago or so. They've since
come out with the G2, which is a 4.3 Megapixel vs. our 3.3, but otherwise it
looks basically the same. Not knowing a lot about "real" photography, we
leave it on auto most of the time, except when we're taking movie files.
The G1 will do about 30 seconds of "film" before the computer needs to reset
itself (or something).
Whatever camera you
buy, you MUST pick up another, larger flash memory card. The G2 comes with
a 32 MB card, but you'll still need something bigger. Even on low
resolution the 32 card won't hold too many pictures. We got a 128 MB card,
which will hold around 100 pictures at Large resolution, and something like 300
at Small. It does help to know what you want the camera for. If
you're planning to use it for web photos, small resolution is fine, but you'll
need higher rez if you plan on making prints.
There are plenty of
others out there (I have a buddy who's a big fan of the Nikon Coolpix), but
that's what I know about.
