POSITION:    Assistant Archivist: Reference
Archivist (Assistant Professor)
PCN:  305713
Full-time, Tenure track, 9 months/year (+ 3 month
extension).
 LOCATION: Archives and Manuscripts Department,
Consortium Library, University of Alaska Anchorage

 SALARY:  Minimum $40,000 annually commensurate
with academic preparation and experience.

Come to the Last Frontier and help build the
Library of the 21st Century!  The Consortium
Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage is
recruiting for the position of Reference Archivist
in the UAA Archives and Manuscripts Department. We
are looking for an energetic, motivated,
experienced archivist to join us in offering
superb service as we build a new state-of-the-art
library building that will include a greatly
expanded archives facility. The new library
complex is scheduled for completion in the Fall of
2004.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate course work or
equivalent in archival administration; and a
graduate degree in history, archives studies,
archives administration, or library science
(ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent); and
substantial experience in an archives or
manuscripts repository is required. Knowledge of
archival arrangement and description; conservation
and preservation; reference and outreach;
copyright issues as applied to archives, security;
and electronic finding aids is essential.
Candidate must have experience with arranging and
describing often complex personal manuscript
collections and institutional archives containing
a variety of record formats; experience working
with the public; clear and effective verbal and
written communication skills; an aptitude for
organizing and expediting work; the ability to
retrieve and shelve boxed records; able to lift,
push and pull boxes weighing up to 45 pounds; and
able to climb ladders.

An individual with professional certification from
the Academy of Certified Archivists is desired.
Candidates experienced with digitization, website
development and maintenance, USMARC records, and
Encoded Archival Description (EAD) are preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Reference Archivist reports
to the Archivist and Manuscripts Curator in the
Consortium Library, University of Alaska
Anchorage. The person in this position conducts
the initial reference interview and responds to
reference inquiries in the department in person,
in writing, by phone, via fax and e-mail.  The
archivist assists researchers to navigate the
collection by utilizing the department's finding
aids and website.  This position administers the
department's research rules and participates in
maintaining archival security; retrieves records;
and assists researchers with viewing and listening
equipment. The Reference Archivist also processes
and describes personal and family manuscript
collections and institutional archives containing
a variety of record formats, applies basic
conservation procedures, and creates USMARC
records. Other duties and responsibilities include
participation in outreach activities, data base
maintenance, and website maintenance. This
position is a tenure track faculty position with
the rank of Assistant Professor. The person
filling this position will be expected to serve on
library, university, professional and/or public
committees.
