Rice University's Fondren Library seeks an experienced, energetic and self-guided Archivist/Special Collections Librarian at the Woodson Research Center.

THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

At the heart of the campus, Fondren Library is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at Rice University, a private, independent university on a tree-shaded 300-acre campus a few miles from downtown Houston, near major museums, theatres and the Texas Medical Center. The library contains a broad spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources. Its resources include approximately 15,500 current journals, over 2 million printed volumes, and 2.7 million microform units. The library staff offers service to world-class faculty and students, participates on committees, and is active in other areas of outreach. Through projects ranging from the off-site Library Service Center to the University-wide digital library initiative, the library offers essential resources, tools, and services to find and manage information, whether digital or analog.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES

The Woodson Research Center is the repository for Fondren Library's special collections of 32,000 rare books, over 400 manuscript collections, and 1800 cubic feet of university archives. The Center makes its materials accessible to local, national, and international communities of researchers and scholars as well as to Rice faculty, students and alumni, through catalogs, finding aids, expert staff search guidance, and exhibits. Woodson Center belongs to the Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO), an online repository of Web-accessible archival resources. RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general guidance of the Head of Special Collections and University Archives, the successful candidate will participate in the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, preservation, and description of archival and manuscript collections and materials in other formats; plan and implement group processing projects utilizing staff at a variety of levels; assist in preparing collection-level descriptions in MARC and EAD format; train and supervise processing assistants; serve as a departmental liaison to the Library Technical Services department; provide some reference service; work with the department head to identify material appropriate for digitization and presentation on the Internet; participate in user education, lectures and tours for university users and other groups; participate in collection development; participate in the preparation of exhibits and other programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: ALA-accredited school Masters degree in library, archival and information studies or Master of Archival Studies degree; knowledge and experience with archives and manuscript control formats, preferably MARC and EAD; familiarity with electronic records issues and with current technological tools for electronic preservation and access, including digitization of archival materials; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to plan, manage, and coordinate complex projects; demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues, administrators, staff, patrons, and donors. Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary range $39,000 minimum, with hiring salary based upon successful candidate's qualifications and experience; no state or local income tax; career advancement program; 21 benefit days; 8 study days; TIAA/CREF; flexible benefits plans, including health, dental and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
