RAINdrop

As a former field geologist who spent a few summers trekking around in the
woods of New England, it was always amazing to stumble across rock walls
seemingly in the middle of nowhere and realize that the forest had once
been farmland.... :) ttfn - Jill.

This article sort of relates to archives in that it discusses obscure
origins of land boundaries and includes some quotes from documents
describing them. The springboard for this article is a family whose
land is divided by a town boundary, so that the house is in one town
(for those outside NYS, read "township") and the barn is in another;
they are petitioning to have the boundary changed so that they are all
in one town. My favorite part of the article is when, in discussing the
way long-ago surveyors described landmarks, the reporter says:
"Surveying has come a long way, he said, citing how an Ulster County
job
once led him to a point described as ''where the old black bear jumped
across the old oak stump.' ''
