Sticky Label Summary

List,
Here is a belated summary of the advice I received
for handling sticky labels.

1. If the offending article is a tape of some sort, use a
low-heat tape removal tool, available in crafts and cloth
stores more reasonably than in archival catalogs. It has
an iron-resembling head and a knob to control the heat.
Using the lowest setting, place the heated tip on top of the
tape. With a microspatula, roll the tape back over the top
of the spatula. Stick residue can be removed with white
rubber eraser crumbs (like an opaline pad, says Sally
Childs-Heston, my source).
2. For paper, form a very thin solution of methy cellulose
or wheat paste. Dab it on the paper and leave it for a
while. Once it has penetrated the paper and the sticky
matter (you hope), gently pick the paper off with a
microspatula. White eraser crumbs or powder will clean
off the dried residue.
3. The final fall-back when the earlier methods don't work
is to apply isopropyl alcohol very sparingly.
4. Use a plastic eraser, found in arts/craft stores, to
gently remove the residue. The eraser leave no residue.
5. Try a product called Un-du, available from the
University Products Co., Holyoke, MA, Catalog #777-
1716.

Many thanks to all those helpful people who responded to
my plea. The List has come through again.
