RAINdrop from dry Utah

State History, Archive Directors Step Down
Thursday, June 6, 2002

      THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

"Gov. Mike Leavitt's administration has edged out the long-time
directors of the state divisions of history and archives in a
restructuring move. Officials insist the resignations of Max Evans,
director of the Utah Historical Society and state Division of History,
and state Archives Director Jeffery Johnson are unrelated to an
aborted proposal to evict a popular cafe from the state-owned Rio
Grande Depot and use the space to house archives. ......."

In the same issue was the following story, about the passing of a
famous architect in Utah:

Boyd Blackner, Legendary SLC Architect, Dies at 68

"Anyone who watches the waters dancing in the fountain at
Abravanel Hall or ducks through the covered alley next to the
Kearns Building on Main Street as a shortcut to the Salt Palace
appreciates the vision of Salt Lake City architect Boyd A.
Blackner. Winner of the 1978 National American Institute of
Architects Honor Award for the "Alley Annex," and respected as an
"architect's architect" by his peers, Blackner, 68, died Monday of
complications of prostate cancer. He leaves a community legacy
for projects ranging from Deer Valley's Stein Eriksen Lodge to the
fountains at Abravanel Hall, the Liberty Park Seven Canyons
fountain, the University of Utah's Library Plaza Waterfall and the
University Hospital Fountain, many done in conjunction with the
late philanthropist O.C. Tanner. .........."

Normally this might not be considered an archives story, but here's
the hook: he also had a sense of history, and when he retired and
began closing down his offices, he donated all of his collection to
us. I well remember hauling truckloads, literally, of drawings, files,
equipment, and so on our of his wonderful office in the Keith
Building on Main Street. That we had to haul everything down
three flights of stairs didn't diminish my admiration and respect for
him; one time, on a preliminary visit, he took us to the historic
Lamb's Cafe across the street, just to show appreciation for what
we did. His collection is one of the real gems in our architectural
holdings.
