Re: Vacancy Announcement CORRECTION



To me the most disturbing aspect of the requirements is not the wages
(albeit low), but rather that the individual must have ACA certification. As
we try, in our own determined way to raise the status of certification, it
seems to me, that requiring certification for this position degrades what we
are trying to accomplish. It reminds me of a position that was posted to the
RM list a while back that wanted a person with CRM and ACA for $12.50/hour.
At least that position only preferred that the individual held both
certifications. Do we need to publish a baseline description for folks so
people can differentiate between preferred and required.

ARCHIVIST, WOMEN'S COLLECTIONS
(Part-Time . 5 FTE)

Georgia State University (GSU) seeks innovative applicants for the position
of Archivist for the Women's Collections. The mission of the Women's
Collections is to collect, preserve and make available primary and secondary
source material of, or related to, 20th/21st Century women in Georgia in
designated subject areas, in particular the Second Women's Movement in
Georgia; to enhance access to resources on women in all Special Collections
holdings, and to promote cooperation among Georgia and national repositories
with materials related to Georgia women. This position reports to the
Special Collections department head, and plays a major role in a
client-centered department with well-established collecting strengths, a
growing research clientele, and a strong emphasis on outreach.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will plan and supervise work related to the
acquisition, appraisal, processing, preservation, and use of archival, oral
history, and printed research collections by and about women. Promote the
use of these materials, contact prospective donors and negotiate the
transfer of materials. Assist in outreach and donor development activities
related to the Georgia State University Women's Collections. Assists in
formulating departmental policies and procedures as well as other
departmental activities.

Requirements
Graduate degree in information/library science (ALA-accredited), history, or
women's studies. Graduate coursework in archival administration. Two plus
years experience in archival work. Evidence of excellent written/oral
communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Preferred: Experience in appraising, preserving and processing 20th century
materials. Knowledge of 20th century women's history. Experience with MARC
cataloging, encoded archival description, web design, and digitization. ACA
certification.

Department, Library and University Environment
The Special Collections Department collects and preserves unique and rare
historical materials in selected subject areas, and promotes the use of
these materials by the Georgia State University community, scholars, and the
public. The department strives to advance scholarship and to further the
educational, research and service missions of the university.

In 1995, the Pullen Library Special Collections Department and the Women's
Studies Institute of Georgia State University initiated a project to
preserve the history of the Second Women's Movement in Georgia and to
encourage continuing scholarship in and pursuit of women's equity. Two of
the major Women's Collections major holdings are the Donna Novak Coles
Georgia Women's Movement Archives and the Lucy Hargrett Draper U.S ERA
(1921-1982) Research Collection.

Other department strengths are 20th century American popular music,
including the papers of Johnny Mercer; the Southern Labor Archives the
largest collection of labor records in the Southeast; oral history
interviews documenting Georgia politics, civil rights, and journalism; 20th
century Atlanta photographs; records of Georgia State University; and a rare
book collection.

The William Russell Pullen Library houses over 1,300,000 volumes and
subscribes to more than 8,000 serials and is a Federal Document Depository
with more than 850,000 government documents. Its growing Media Center has
holdings of approximately 12,000 audio, video, and multimedia materials. The
carefully selected collections are designed to serve the varied research and
instructional needs, at the undergraduate and graduate levels of the
university community. Library services are supported by GIL (GALILEO
Interconnected Libraries) with integrated functions for OPAC, acquisitions,
circulation systems and serials control, including a system-wide union
catalog, as well as a library-wide Novell LAN. The University System of
Georgia has linked together institutions into a statewide system known as
GALILEO providing equal access to electronic resources and other materials
for libraries throughout the state. Pullen Library is a member of the
Association of Southeastern Research Libraries; the Southeastern Library
Network (SOLINET), and the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education,
consisting of fourteen academic and research libraries serving nineteen
institutions in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area.

Georgia State University (GSU) is a dynamic urban institution located in
downtown Atlanta with an enrollment of approximately 25,000 students. The
close relationship that exists between the university and its surrounding
business, government and cultural communities makes GSU unique in the
University System of Georgia and distinctive among universities in the

Condition of Work and Benefits
Twenty-hour work week, retirement plans include: state teachers retirement
plan,  TIAA - CREF and VALIC, twenty one days vacation,  twelve paid
holidays, group health and life insurance, twelve days sick leave, Social
Security, Faculty rank and status, optional pre-tax benefits, Non-Tenure
track, support for research and professional activities.

Salary and Rank
$17,000 - $22,000 for 12 months commensurate with the candidate's
experience. Appointment at a faculty rank, on a contract renewal basis.
