Congressional Papers Project

Smith College's Sophia Smith Collection invites applications for two
full-time positions for a 15-month project to process a large body of
papers of a member of the U.S. Congress.  The Project Archivist and
Manuscripts Processor will arrange and describe the collection and will
organize an exhibition and event to publicize the opening.  The
anticipated project start date is August 1, 2002.

Project Archivist

Responsibilities:  report to the Curator and supervise a full-time
Manuscripts Processor and student staff; plan and monitor work flow;
assess preservation and arrangement needs; make recommendations
regarding access to individual series; write and edit inventory and
create electronic cataloging records; monitor supplies and supplies
budget; and write periodic progress reports.  Qualifications: MA or an
ALA-accredited MLS;  formal course work in archives administration plus
one to three years experience processing large bodies of organization
records in an archives or manuscripts repository; experience with
legislative records is preferred; strong verbal and written
communication skills; experience identifying sensitive materials and
devising restrictions on access; experience in automated applications
for archives and database management, including creating USMARC-AMC
bibliographic records; experience creating exhibitions; two years
experience supervising student assistants and other staff; and a
commitment to collaborative working process.

Manuscripts Processor

Responsibilities:  assist in arranging a large collection of
professional papers and supervise student assistants; create folder
lists, compile information and write drafts of series descriptions;
research the collection for the biographical sketch; identify sensitive
materials that might require access restrictions; apply basic
preservation techniques; identify items for an exhibition and assist in
its creation.  Qualifications:  BA in U.S. History, American Studies, or
a related field plus at least six months experience arranging
collections and applying basic preservation techniques in an archives or
manuscripts repository or a combination of education and related
experience; experience in preparing finding aids and exhibitions;
experience supervising student assistants; strong verbal and written
communications skills; good work processing skills; experience handling
sensitive materials.
