Re: Infestation

Well this is a long shot, but don't the use carbon dioxide in packaging to
offset decomposition in packaged goods? I wonder if something like that
could be applied here as well?

Dear Hans and Cheri:

The factory seal was not meant to last long, and is unlikely to be proof
against bugs, or mold. First, ditch the food. If possible, clean the
package to remove as much food residue as you can. Next, store these
packages separately from the rest of the collection. For as long as you
keep them, you will need to inspect them regularly for signs of infestation.

Post your inquiry to the American Association of Museums website, and to
conservation outfits like NEDCC and CCAHA, for a more informed opinion than
mine.

P. S. Why do you want to retain the contents, anyway? If this stuff was
made in the U. S. A., then anyone "curious" about the recipe can read the
ingredients right on the package.

Best of luck!

Dear Colleagues,

While processing the papers of H.A. and Margret Rey, creators of the lovable
(and lucrative) Curious George, we ran upon a conservation challenge. Among
the huge assortment of merchandising products is a box of Curious George
"fruit" snacks (yuck). The box contains 6 factory-sealed candy packages.
Ideally, we would like to preserve the candy as well as the box itself, but
we
are worried about attracting insects. Will the sealed packages themselves
be
adequate to keep out bugs, or should we find a better method of packaging?
Furthermore, will the inevitable decay of organic matter create larger
problems
down the road (although there are probably enough preservatives in the stuff
to
turn it to stone in a few years anyway)?

Thanks in advance,
