The Pennsylvania Hospital Historic Collections seeks a Project Archivist to
arrange and describe its photographic holdings as a part of an eighteen-
month project funded by the National Historical Publications and Records

The Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin
Franklin, was chartered in 1751 by the colonial government as the first
institution in America organized exclusively for the treatment and care of
the sick poor and mentally ill. As the nation's first hospital, it was
also the first to treat mental illness. Established in one of the fastest
growing cities in colonial America, Pennsylvania Hospital helped to shape
the development of health care in the nation.

The Archives of the Pennsylvania Hospital have been gathered for nearly 250
years, preserving the hospital?s distinguished history. The collection
includes administration and financial records, patient files, photographs
and other visual materials, personal papers of hospital practitioners, and
artifacts, as well as the records of Pennsylvania Hospital affiliates such
as the Philadelphia Dispensary, the Preston Retreat, the Southern
Dispensary, the Philadelphia Lying-In Charity, the Maternity Hospital, the
Nurse Charity, and the Humane Society. It is a unique resource for
genealogists and scholars interested in the history of hospital
development, health care, medicine, and architecture.
