Subject: Digitizing taped interviews

I have recently discovered some taped interviews with former university
professors that I think need preserving. These are all on cassette
tapes and appear to have been recorded in the 1970s and 1980s.
Obviously, they exhibit a little wear when listened to and need to be
transferred to a newer tape or other medium. I'm thinking of
transfering them to CD ROM, having just acquired a CD Burner. I'm
interested in knowing if anyone else has done something like this and
what they used- WAV files, RealPlayer, or any other program. Plus, any
suggestions as to "cleaning up" the sound would be appreciated. Thanks.
