Re: reference

Dear Russell:

I'm a great believer in surveys. I'm also a great proponent of better reference service training for archivists. But what is one to make of "rate the role"? What is it about reference service that is to be rated? The importance of it to the institutional mission, or to the departmental mission, or in the respondent's job description, or in the respondent's opinion? The amount of staff time spent in providing this service? The ratio of time-spent to value-provided? The quality of the reference work being done, and if so, is that quality to be measured by the response received from the clientele, by supervisors' evaluations of the staff's work, or in respondent's opinion? Without a better focus than this, the session may indeed be a "penal discussion".

Once again, dear colleagues, I need your help.

I would like to sample your opinions, regardless of your archival job title,
of the importance of archival reference services in the great scheme of
things.
On a scale of 1 - 10 with 1 being "not very important", 5 being "important",
and 10 being "very important", how would you rate the role of reference
services in your archives operations currently.
I will release the results of this survey during the Penal Discussion I will
chair on archival reference at SAA meeting next month.

Thanks and have a wonderful rest of the summer.
