Hi Vernonica,
I got an answer to your question that is different than the one I first
suggested
and much more authorative, coming from a Canadian scholar, Robert Vezina,
who really knows the language of the fur traders. "Saccaje chien" is a
deformation
of "sacredieu de chien", which means something like "damned dog", even
though
"sacredieu" veut dire "Holy God!"
So "saccaje", contrary to appearances, has nothing to to with the verb
"saccager".
The spelling "saccaje" is a transcription of popular Canadian pronunciation
such as "sakedjeu d'chien".
cheers,
Reg
