Disposing of rare books

We regularly offer materials to each other on this list, but once in a while something turns up that I'm not quite ready to pass along gratis, such as a 1851 imprint of _Uncle Tom's Cabin_ or Wilhelm von Humboldt's _Ideen zu einem Versuch, die Graenzen der Wirksamkeit des Staats zu bestimmen_ (Breslau, 1851). The latter item appears in online booksellers lists priced at $600 and $1450.

These items are outside the scope of our collection. How do others deal with the disposal of such items?

I'm sure this will be of general interest for the list (or maybe it's been covered before).

Marvin
