Food

I was going to stay out of this thread, but I'm drooling so much that I can no longer resist. ;->

I'm from Philadelphia (the home of all sorts of delicious crap). When I moved to Syracuse in 1985, I
asked some of the natives what the local delicacies were. They all looked perplexed. None had a
ready answer. Finally one of them mentioned salt potatoes. The others assented. No other suggestions
emerged. So I tried salt potatoes. They're little tiny potatoes boiled in brine and served with way
too much butter. They're absolutely wretched IMHO. I love potatoes in general, but these are a
travesty. Give me home fries with onions and peppers anytime.

I'll refrain from singing the praises of Philadelphia cuisine (although I could). I'll only mention
a few joints: Bella Italia in Ardmore, Pizzi's in Bryn Mawr, the Pepper Mill between West Chester
and Paoli, and a few holes-in-the-walls along the rough diagonal between 22nd and Chestnut and 3rd
and South.

But I'm really here to talk about New Orleans. I've been there only once, in 1998. I had always
heard that if you stayed out of the fast food chains, it was impossible to get a bad meal in New
Orleans. So I decided to test that hypothesis. I checked into my hotel, then walked down the street
at random, went into the very first bar I saw and ordered lunch. It was fantastic!!!! The bar was
the Charles Street Tavern, if I recall correctly.

BTW, what have been referred to on the list as "spedies" are really spelled "spiedies." I've seen
'em but never ate one. Maybe I should.

Cheers!

Eric
