THE BARNES FOUNDATION ARCHIVES:

The Barnes Foundation was established in 1922 by scientist and educator
Albert C. Barnes as an educational institution dedicated to the advancement
of education and the appreciation of fine arts and horticulture. The
Foundation is known worldwide for its exceptional collection of French
Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, African sculpture and
American decorative arts. In 2001, The Foundation embarked on a three-year
Collections Assessment Project, including art objects on display and in
storage, archives, rare books, and library holdings.

The Barnes Foundation Archives is a newly-established department of The
Foundation which seeks to document the activities of The Foundation and its
community. The Archives also documents the personal and professional lives
of its founders, Dr. Albert C. Barnes and Laura Leggett Barnes. The archival
collections include approximately 2,000 linear feet of correspondence,
financial records, ephemera, photographs, publications, and other records
from before the founding of the organization to the present day. The
Archives provides the history and provenance for much of the art collection.
