Ancient Greek Literary Style: Bicolon, Tricolon, Isocolon

Read the following on Exegetical Tools regarding a New Commentary on Ephesians by S. M. Baugh, Baugh This started with Eph 1:3-14. Most commentators notice this is one "sentence" in Greek and some treat it as if Paul is being undisciplined and too wordy here. My notion was to ask how the o...

Re: aorist participles

Dear GRogers, Having been a Basketball Official for 24 yrs (3500 games) when I retired in 2010 I always remember this rule of thumb, "Know your definitions; when in doubt check the Case Book." Now, the High School Rule Book consisted of many different rules (10 and broken down from there),...

Re: εἷς ἐστὶν ὁ θεός

Dear Alan, There is also Rodney J. Decker's, Koine Greek Reader that has as his translation on page 216, "M.1.1. First of all, believe that God is one, ..." James 2:19 is the immediate reference εἷς ἐστὶν ὁ θεός as Ken Penner has also stated. See the following examples: Matthew 19:17, Εἷς ...

Re: εγω ειμι

Dear Barry, Your welcome. BTW, I wonder how this would fit in the discussion regarding the authorship of John and Revelation since the same phrases are being used in both books? The above question is just for thought since it could be construed to be against Forum Guidelines, but if some one wishes ...

Re: εγω ειμι

Dear Barry, Thanks for the comments. Now regarding ὁ ὢν. Besides Exodus 3:14 whereit is found 2x, it is also found in I Kings 16:22 (regarding the followers of Omri). Matt 12:30 ὁ μὴ ὢν μετ’ ἐμοῦ κατ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν, καὶ ὁ μὴ συνάγων μετ’ ἐμοῦ σκορπίζει. Luke 11:23 Ὁ μὴ ὢν μετ’ ἐμοῦ κατ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν, καὶ...

Re: εγω ειμι

Dear Alan, It is interesting that the first use of εγω ειμι is found in Genesis 4:9 LXX on the lips of Cain in response to God's question about the whereabouts of Abel: καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Καιν Ποῦ ἐστιν Αβελ ὁ ἀδελφός σου; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Οὐ γινώσκω, μὴ φύλαξ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μού εἰμι ἐγώ; Now, Ex. 3:14 an...

Re: THE or A Messiah - Joh 4,25

Dear Peter, The noun, Μεσίας, is used as a definite noun and should have the article. This is further clarified by Jesus Himself when He says, "λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι ," Carl has also given the corresponding lexical data as well. I would also highly recommend the follow...

I would recommend the following: http://www.chrys-caragounis.com/Popular ... erotic.pdf. The 126 pages is well-written and covers a lot of ground.

Re: Heb 2:5-9 in NIV - αὐτόν as "them"

Dear Shirley, Fortunately, I did not go there. I preferred not to "rest on my laurels" too much now (pun intended) I did asked them what a "good luck charm" was and the like. They answered the question with excellent questions. The we talked about Saul and how the people re...

Dear Jason, Sorry for the late reply. Preparing to teach Children's Church this Sunday. That is going to be interesting teaching K-5 on the capturing of the Ark of the Covenant and King Saul. Regarding the quote from Psalms. It should be translated as consistent with the Hebrew wording when translat...
