Re: Is this a legitimate translation of Hebrews 1:8?

Definition is always difficult. Lucian of Samosata ! Dip Chrysostom, and Plutarch are all late first or second century authors, as is Strabo. Musinius Rufus is the first century teacher of Epictetus. All are contemporary With or later than the NT writings. But all are regarded as part of the classic...

Re: pronunciation difference between η and ει

The modern Greek, pronunciation is called iotacism. Ai, Ei, oi, I, ETA, are all pronounced the same. It makes learning correct spelling difficult for beginners in the Greek language. That is why in teaching beginning Greek I did not use this modern Greek pronunciation, though I taught students about ...

Re: Coining a phrase

You should not be using the verb λέγω, which should be translated pronounce. Instead the proper verb would be ονομάζω, to give a name to something.

Re: Answer Key to Machen

I agree with Barry. I learned Attic Greek from the text book by Herbert Weir Smythe, the author of the standard grammar of Classical Greek. After that we read Xenophon’s Anabasis, Homer’s Odyssey, and Plato’s Apology. In graduate school We read widely all of Homer’s two epics in two semesters, three...

Re: Eph 2:8 τοῦτο ... τὸ δῶρον

Barry Hofstetter is 100% right. Trading extensively in ancient Greek texts is indispensable.

I recall reading a Greek historian who began his text with a δε’ as the second word. We debated for an hour how that term should be translated, ending, as I recall, withe the translation “now”.

What Carl Conrad writes makes great good sense. Thus discussion is about Logomachy! Whether ife is one word or two makes no difference to its pronunciation or meaning. One might trust that scribes of Greek mss knew how to write it.

Re: Greek Composition 4x4 Challenge

When I took Greek Composition in Grad School under Prof. Saul Levin his rule was that I had to be able to cite an ancient author who used the vocabulary in the sense I used it or the construction in the way I used it. I paged LSJ extensively to validate my translation of Lincoln's Gettisburg Address...

Re: Concordance including all the versions?

Please observe standard terminology. Youn are seeking to list all variant readings, not versions.

Version is the technical term for translations of the original text (i.e. the Greek) , e. g, Latin Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, etc. ;)

Re: Eph. 2:1, 5 and ὄντας with the dative case of the clause

Please note that Ephesians 1:3-12 is one sentence. The main verb is implied n the Blessed be the God etc in v. 3. You are discussing the verb in a relative clause.
