Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

More thoughts: I believe wholeheartedly that in the inspired Scriptures, the writers chose their words carefully and with intent to convey what they were being inspired to convey. I believe the same is true with the grammar they used. So, in an investigation such as this I am trying very hard to dis...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

James said: You need to bear in mind that the later recensions generally revised the Greek toward a more literalistic, word-for-word translation. Yes - I see that, and that has real value in the kind of investigation I am engaged in here. James also said: I guess what I'm saying is that translation...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

Regarding Theodotion, from Wikipedia: Theodotion's translation was so widely copied in the Early Christian church that its version of the Book of Daniel virtually superseded the Septuagint's. The Septuagint Daniel survives in only two known manuscripts, Codex Chisianus 88 (rediscovered in the 1770s)...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

James,
You said: Rahlf-Hanhart don't list a variant on that verse in either the Old Greek or Theodotian
Does Rahlf-Hanhart employ συντέλεια or does it employ πέρας or some other at Dan. 11:35?

I looked on Amazon and I can get the Rahlf-Hanhart for about $125, so not expensive.

Thanks!

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

Yes, what I like most about the Septuagint is that it does afford an opportunity to delve into both the Greek and the Hebrew! The insights gained are well worth the effort, too!

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

My first name is William. I'm glad we agree on the divine inspiration - and I also know what you say about setting that aside here in favor of linguistic questions is important, and I will do my best to abide by that policy. I want to sincerely thank Devenios, S Walch and Jonathon for all the valuab...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

Devenios, You make an excellent point about making an appeal to Jesus himself - yes, it would have had to have been Matthew and not Jesus. However, Matthew was inspired by God when he wrote his Gospel account, so I think that fact (I accept that as a fact) does bring the Divine authority into the pi...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

Ok - bringing up English translations is mostly irrelevant, I agree. But I only brought that up in passing, not in order to make any of my points about the fundamental difference between συντέλεια and τέλος - for those points I used the Greek itself. Anyway, this actually gets off the track a bit as...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

I would say that some pretty respectable references insist that συντέλεια is NOT a simple end: Cognate: 4930 syntéleia (from 4862 /sýn, "close together with" and 5055 /teléō, "complete, consummate") – culmination (completion), i.e. when the parts come together into a whole ("...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

Here is a link the site and content where I used the LXX: https://biblehub.com/sepd/daniel/11.htm It does employ συντελείας· rather than πέρας Using πέρας here makes total sense to me. I was not aware that there were newer versions of the LXX - were these created to make corrections to the old (orig...
