Re: 'the forms you really need to know'

I can probably access it on Monday at my university library.

Re: Modern Hebrew and spoken ancient languages

The Classics-L thread was from July, titled "Conversational Greek." A quick google search doesn't yield anything for me, but it should come up in a search of the archives at http://lsv.uky.edu/scripts/wa.exe?S1=classics-l. If I remember correctly, someone made the objection that communicat...

Re: Modern Hebrew and spoken ancient languages

Stephen C., I've run across it on the internet a few times, most recently on the classics listserv. "Common" may have been overstating it. For example, from the comments at http://bltnotjustasandwich.com/2011/09/25/response-to-daniel-street-why-it-is-a-pipe-dream/ : My concern is that an i...

Modern Hebrew and spoken ancient languages

I ran across this article today (http://www.zuckermann.org/pdf/Hybridity_versus_Revivability.pdf) and would be interested to know what you all think about it. Some relevant bits from the conclusion: This article contributes towards recognizing that the revival of a no-longer spoken language is unlik...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars

and Stephen Hill wrote I agree that there's no substitute for reading authentic Greek The proposition that new learners of Koine need to only read 'authentic Greek' is a straw man. In the long term, intermediate-advanced learners want to read Greek, with all its odd sentence frontings and odd sente...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars

Randall Buth's website is http://www.biblicallanguagecenter.com/ , but hopefully he'll see this thread and give us his thoughts. I agree that there's no substitute for reading authentic Greek, but I think we have different ideas about the best way to prepare for that. Memorizing vocabulary and gramm...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars

I don't know of any "inductive" or "reading" approaches for Koine Greek along the lines of Ecce Romani. Christophe Rico's Polis book is inductive in the sense that it presents grammar in context before explaining it (all in Koine, though). Randall Buth's materials are also all in...

Re: Best lexicons available online?

I've found Diogenes pretty handy: http://www.dur.ac.uk/p.j.heslin/Software/Diogenes/. It has Perseus' LSJ and Lewis and Short in a format you can download and use offline.

Re: Android support for polytonic Greek

Ken, no, I hadn't. That's very helpful.

Jason, I'll be happy if I can just view it, though typing would be nice. Good to have confirmation that the Ubuntu font will work. Thanks!

Android support for polytonic Greek

I'm considering getting an Android tablet, but googling has yielded conflicting reports on whether Android can handle polytonic Greek. The demo models I've played with in stores can't display quite a few characters, and I'll have to go with iOS if there's no solution. Has anyone here successfully go...
