Re: Does κόσμος in the NT connect with the OT usage?

The brief article had some very useful insights: * Wisdom of Solomon features usages in line with the NT * the Greeks saw the kosmos as beautiful in its orderliness * the NT's negative usage of kosmos is Jewish, not Greek in origin * John's usage of kosmos largely parallels his use of "the Jews" and...

Re: Does κόσμος in the NT connect with the OT usage?

I have considered some notion of kosmos in the NT having some continuity with the OG if we understand God to be referring to the theocracy as his "jewel" but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of anyone making that connection. But I found this article that may give me more info: https://www.jstor...

Wow, I had no idea you could do that in Logos. Cool.
I wonder if you have to have a certain scholars package to perform such a search. My Logos subscription is basically just the free stuff. LOL
I think it is part of the Base Package in Logos 8.

Re: Does κόσμος in the NT connect with the OT usage?

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that "κόσμος means Judaism" but rather that Paul and John used the word to *refer* to the Jewish theocracy (the old covenant system of things). With regard to this, στοιχεῖα might refer either to the elementary principles of the world as understood by pagans or to t...

Okay, I have no problem appreciating the heightened drama now that you call it attention to it. Thanks. Perfect.

In Mark 15:39 what is the function of ὁ ἄνθρωπος?

Mark 15:39 ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν ἀληθῶς **οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος υἱὸς θεοῦ ἦν** It seems to me that Mark could have just said: Mark 15:39 ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ κεντυρίων ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐξ ἐναντίας αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως ἐξέπνευσεν εἶπεν ἀληθῶς **οὗτος υἱὸς θεοῦ ἦν** Is M...

Re: Does κόσμος in the NT connect with the OT usage?

To avoid a complex problem I'll just isolate one, which might make it easier to discuss. Isn't it unusual for there to be such an abrupt disconnect between the OG and the NT? I find it jarring. Am I alone in that? Is the OG usage of κόσμος more like extant secular usage that is the NT usage? Or vice...

Does κόσμος in the NT connect with the OT usage?

Disclaimer: I have no formal education in biblical languages. In the "LXX" (which is part of the Koine period) κόσμος seems to be to generally be used to refer to jewelry, as in BDAG's first glosses: κόσμος, ου, ὁ (Hom.+) ① that which serves to beautify through decoration, adornment, adorning (Hom.+...

Re: The Words Συντελεία and Τέλος in Mt 24

As to Matthew 24:3 I just checked NASB and they have "end" but they have footnote of "Or, consummation". So they seem to leave either reading as a possibility in terms of the semantic domain and syntax. So 24:3 seems un-compelling either way. But since Matthew 13:40 seems to be an open and shut case...
