Romans 2:21-23, Change from article to relative pronoun
In Romans 2:21-23, Paul addresses the Jew who condemns others for their sin and yet practices the same basic things in his own life. Here are the verses: ὁ οὖν διδάσκων ἕτερον σεαυτὸν οὐ διδάσκεις; ὁ κηρύσσων μὴ κλέπτειν κλέπτεις; ὁ λέγων μὴ μοιχεύειν μοιχεύεις; ὁ βδελυσσόμενος τὰ εἴδωλα ἱεροσυλεῖς;...

Re: The meaning of ὁρίζω in Romans 1:4
Appointing is a performative definition and declaration is a public definition that need not be performative. Kimmo, if I understand correctly the language that you are using in "performative" then I think you are right at the point that I am asking about. As I look at the use of this wor...

Re: The meaning of ὁρίζω in Romans 1:4
I have to say that I'm a little skeptical of the "declare" rendering for Rom 1:4 from a Greek perspective...I am concerned that theological issues are clouding the translation here, because using a term like "declare" permits the inference that Jesus had been the Son of God earl...

Re: The meaning of ὁρίζω in Romans 1:4
I am thinking that the other instances of the word focus more on the actual "making" of someone to have a certain position rather than the mere "declaring" of it as a reality that long has been. When I hear "declared," I think that we are probably thinking in terms of t...

The meaning of ὁρίζω in Romans 1:4
In Romans 1:4, the verb ὁρίζω (form: ὁρισθέντος) is found described Jesus as being the Son of God. Here is the text of the first 4 verses of Romans: “Παῦλος δοῦλος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, κλητὸς ἀπόστολος ἀφωρισμένος εἰς εὐαγγέλιον θεοῦ, ὃ προεπηγγείλατο διὰ τῶν προφητῶν αὐτοῦ ἐν γραφαῖς ἁγίαις περὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars
Beginning learners need lots of input and they need to be able to understand it without constantly translating it. I hear what you are saying here. If we are constantly thinking in terms of identifying a word, looking it up, writing down its English meaning, etc., etc., then there is no flow or rhy...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars
My experience, at both the college and high school level, is that students from other institutions who have used highly inductive approaches (e.g., Ecce Romani for Latin), are often able to read the texts they already have read, but have difficulty with anything else. It could be that I am simply l...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars
When you look at a mother's speech, the first speech, to her child, she does not take into consideration language structures. When she speaks to her child, she has no concern for "I'm teaching him/her 'o' nouns. I'm teaching my child 'alpha-eta' nouns." She is concerned with getting her c...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars
Thanks for all the responses and thoughts. I am reading them and working to absorb them. I confess that I am a bit of a neophite when it comes to the technical terminology for all of the approaches to language learning. I have thought about similar issues on me own, I suppose, but not discussed them...

Re: More Inductive Beginning Grammars
Thanks for the response, Stephen. I have seen Randall Buth's name on this forum plenty in the little I have started reading it. Could you tell me what books he has written that you reference here? I can't find them on amazon. You mentioned that much of the New Testament is not "native" Gre...
