Imperative and subjunctive

In Luke 10 : 4 - μὴ βαστάζετε βαλλάντιον, μὴ πήραν, μὴ ὑποδήματα, καὶ μηδένα κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἀσπάσησθε - the imperative mood is followed by, I think, a subjunctive of prohibition. Is there significance to the meaning in the use of the subjunctive in the second part of the sentence. Why not just use an...

εἰπὲ λόγῳ

In Luke 7:7 - διὸ οὐδὲ ἐμαυτὸν ἠξίωσα πρὸς σὲ ἐλθεῖν: ἀλλὰ εἰπὲ λόγῳ, καὶ ἰαθήτω ὁ παῖς μου - the centurion tells Jesus to just say with a λόγῳ and his servent will be healed. It has the sense of the word being a thing like a tool that can cause healing to happen, because, I think, that this is an e...

ἐν, μεθ', παρ'

In this week's Gospel, John 14: 8 - 17, there is a lot of use of the word ἐν. I wonder if I am oversimplifying by substituting the English in, or if I should investigate further how ἐν is used. οὐ πιστεύεις ὅτι ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ πατρὶ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστιν; τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἀπ' ἐμαυτοῦ οὐ λαλῶ:...

why use the aorist

I thought I had a good understanding of this weeks gospel selection, but when I checked my translation of John 17: 25 I seem to have missed something: πάτερ δίκαιε, καὶ ὁ κόσμος σε οὐκ ἔγνω, ἐγὼ δέ σε ἔγνων, καὶ οὗτοι ἔγνωσαν ὅτι σύ με ἀπέστειλας, Most translations translate ἔγνω and ἔγνων and ἔγνωσ...

Re: use of the aorist

I appreciate the discussion. Your comments help me to better understand the function of the aorist and use of the subjunctive.

use of the aorist

I have noticed that I often have expectations for the text because I know what the Greek is "supposed" to say because I recognize the passage. In this week's Gospel the I puzzled over the use of aorist verbs in John 14: 29...καὶ νῦν εἴρηκα ὑμῖν πρὶν γενέσθαι, ἵνα ὅταν γένηται πιστεύσητε. I...

Re: Too many "hims"

Yes, I see. Perhaps, because the words would have originally been in Aramaic, it is like the Hebrew fashion of repeating the same idea again but slightly differently, as in the Psalms.

Re: Too many "hims"

Thanks,
Now I see the last phrase as kind of an aside, that embellishes the previous phrase, rather than continuing it.

Too many "hims"

This week the Gospel lectionary selection (John 13, vs 31-35) has a confusing statement: καὶ ὁ θεὸς δοξάσει αὐτὸν ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ εὐθὺς δοξάσει αὐτόν. There are too many third person pronouns. And I wonder about the inclusion of εὐθὺς...why the sense of immediacy is there. I think it should be translat...

Re: Hello

Thanks for the reply. I see I should have paid attention to the case of the τις.
