Gal 1:19 James an apostolos?

HI all, Working through Galatians and bumped into the verse that Historical Jesus scholars fight over. My qu...

Re: Romans 15:16 ινα clause

I would take it with the whole of τὸ εἶναί με λειτουργὸν Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, ἱερουργοῦντα τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ θεοῦ - which itself is the purpose (εἰς) for which God gave him grace. Thanks Andrew. I didnt think of relating it with the τὸ εἶναί. Just wondering now whether the εἰς really gives, a...

Re: Romans 6:2 Died to or Died in?

I realise this is a well old post, but i think its pretty relevant that the dative pronoun αὐτῇ is preceded by ἐν and probably should be translated, as it almost always is, "in it' - "it" being "sin". For the parallel to work, surely it makes more sense to treat the former d...

Romans 15:16 ινα clause

Hi guys, Currently working on Rom 15:16 and am trying to work out how the ινα clause works.

Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; ἐπιμένωμεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, ἵνα ἡ χάρις πλεονάσῃ; Hi guys, Just a quick question about the subjunctive ἐπιμένωμεν in this verse. Its either hortatory 'let us remain' or deliberative 'shall we remain?' Often, this has been understood to be the voice of one of Paul's opponents who is asking...

Strange conditional in 1 Thess 4:14

What do you guys make of this? Its a first class conditional so i guess something like "if, for the sake of argument, we believe Jesus died and rose". My problem is that the apo...

Discourse Use of Καί

I realise this thread is way old, but i didnt want to start a new discussion if there was already a thread. {Mod note: Actually, this involves a different sense of the word καί, so I would have split it anyway. --scc} Im working through Runge's Discourse Grammar and Wallaces Grammar at the same time...

Chiasm

I was just reading an article that uses a chiasmic structure in Galatians I make an argument (the article was not from a scholar associated with linguistics per se). Was just curious as to how such a structure would be dealt with via discourse analysis. Should it be considered as a particular form o...

Re: Paul's Oral/Written Discourse

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess our only option is to study it as written discourse anyway as we don't have any tapes if Paul or any o his minions performing the letter. On a related note, do you think urgency might be a factor that impacts some aspects of analysis. If a letter was being compos...
