Re: John 6:58 - οὐ καθὼς ἔφαγον οἱ πατέρες καὶ ἀπέθανον·

whether there is an ellipsis there at all in the καθως clause, which I don’t think that there is. You may be right. My main point is that people see something which deviates from (in their opinion) good, complete, neat, clean grammar/syntax. Then they try to explain this by resorting to some missin...

Re: John 6:58 - οὐ καθὼς ἔφαγον οἱ πατέρες καὶ ἀπέθανον·

Maybe the grammatical/syntactic helps try to be so analytical that they make this, and whole language, too wooden? I think I have sometimes said that in my opinion we don't need to find the exact words left out in an ellipsis. The original speakers didn't first form a grammatically, syntactically an...

Re: Titus 2:3 "καλοδιδασκάλους"

This is necessarily a larger exegetical and theological question, and also personal to many of us. This whole discussion has been beaten to death many times, thousands of articles and even whole books written about it, including lexicographical and grammatical problems and non-problems. No consensus...

Re: Strange teachings

In those examples those people don't seem to be able to express their thoughts well. I would give them a benefit of doubt and think that they mean something else than what they say. For example, in Gordon Lewis summarizes the usage as follows: The verb is used fifteen times in the New Testament. &qu...

Re: Text Comparison. - Same/Similar English Words - Two Greek Words - One a Noun - One a Verb

I guess that in all languages there's a way to refer to a process with a noun which oftentimes is directly related to the similar verb. In English think about for example "to run" and "a run". The first is a verb, the second is a noun. The grammatical classification or form is co...

Re: Mark 14:8 syntax

For some reason I find Jean's answer difficult to "parse", and I don't think I agree. In my opinion it's more simple: [ὃ ἔσχεν] [ἐποίησεν] i.e. "that which she had (=within her possibilities to do), she did". Would it have been easier to understand with a comma, "ὃ ἔσχεν, ἐπ...

Re: Ephesians 2:8 - τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον

δῶρον is a noun, not an adjective or a pronoun, it has its own gender which doesn't change (at least usually, and in any case it doesn't have to change). The same referent can be referred to by a feminine or masculine and a neuter noun. You have some serious confusion here. Take a child as an exampl...

Re: How do I go about translating Romans 5:6?

Actually, the both passages could be analyzed like this, with three modifiers for one verb:
  • οὐ ποιήσω ὅμοια αὐτοῖς
  • οὐ ποιήσω ἔτι
  • οὐ ποιήσω κατὰ πάντα τὰ βδελύγματά σου
And
  • ὄντων ἔτι
  • ὄντων κατὰ τὴν χώραν
  • ὄντων τῶν πλειόνων

Re: How do I go about translating Romans 5:6?

I don't think this sequence has much relevance here, except that these examples show that ἔτι can be the last word in a phrase. Even as the poetically split lines show in Ezekiel, κατὰ belongs to the next phrase. Because the splits between phrases are after ἔτι, it means the next word can be anythin...
