Barry has always been special, and he will be missed.
Our interactions go back about 15 years on the Which Version email forum.
It is sad, and with a heavy heart, that we hear this news.
Blessings to Barry and the family and friends, in Jesus name.

Re: neuter series of nouns
Here's another verse that is very similar, equating a neuter noun with a masculine one: ὁ δὲ παράκλητος, τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ὃ πέμψει ὁ πατὴρ ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου, ἐκεῖνος ὑμᾶς διδάξει πάντα καὶ ὑπομνήσει ὑμᾶς πάντα ἃ εἶπον ὑμῖν .... Note the masculine for ὁ δὲ παράκλητος ... ἐκεῖνος, which is equated ...

Re: neuter series of nouns
1John 5:7-8 (Critical Text)"]καὶ τρεῖς εἰσιν οἱ μαρτυροῦντες ἐν τῇ γῇ, τὸ πνεῦμα, καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ, καὶ τὸ αἷμα καὶ οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν The issue comes up as to whether the neuter nouns would be expected to have neuter grammar, and in what circumstances they might exceptionally be connected to...

Re: neuter series of nouns
Hi Jonathan, Thanks. This is actually a different question than I was asking, however it is important, so let's work with it a bit. We see there are many explanations of the masculine, when a grammarian must work with the Critical Text. !!! SNIP !!!! Moderator's note: let's please stick with the gra...

Re: neuter series of nouns
Hi Jonathan, The basic questions go like this: ============================================= Is Eugenius Bulgaris right that a series of neuter nouns will normally connect to a participle with neuter grammatical gender. Are there examples of this type of construction in the church writings and class...

neuter series of nouns
Afaik, the New Testament has few verses that have a neuter series of nouns. One verse, perhaps the only verse of this nature that is relevant to grammatical gender studies, is the earthly witnesses of 1 John. And the text, the grammatical context, is different in the Received Text and the Critical ...

Re: 1 Timothy 3:16 - ὃς , the grammar of the Critical Text
Hi Jonathan, The question of whether a relative pronoun has an antecedent is a fundamental question. On the CT of 1 Timothy 3:16, Barry Hofstetter and a few others say that the antecedent search often spoken of is unnecessary. (e.g. the church of the living God and the living God have been given as...

Re: 1 Timothy 3:16 - ὃς , the grammar of the Critical Text
Hi, Steven, in your own words, what is your grammatical question? I'm having a hard time with this line of reasoning: Stephen Frary pointed out that one problem is that analogous verses have no such constructio ad sensum relating Jesus Christ to "mystery". So if Paul doesn't do it elsewhe...

Re: 1 Timothy 3:16 - ὃς , the grammar of the Critical Text
Hi, I see it simply as a constructio ad sensum, that the mystery of godliness is specified as "the one who..." which is clearly a personal reference. Thanks. Yes, this idea has often been discussed in the historical literature. (And I noticed just now that there was a thread here in 2013 ...

1 Timothy 3:16 - ὃς , the grammar of the Critical Text
Hi, The grammar of this verse, especially in the variant that is currently in the critical text, has been the subject of controversy for over 300 years. 1 Timothy 3:16 (AV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of ang...
