Re: John 3:2 Ῥαββί (רַבִּי) and διδάσκαλος

Randall, It may not mean much to you, but I re-read your article a couple of weeks ago out of the blue. Someone linked it on the Nerdy Language Majors on Facebook, and I just decided to sit down and really give it a read. I think you answered all of my objections, and I came away convinced that you'...

Re: Recommend papyri for teaching?

From a pedagogical point-of-view, before deciding on course material, it might be an idea to ask what the participants are hoping to get out of the course. Are they preachers who want to brush up exegetical skills for preparing sermons? Do they want to inform/re-vitalize their personal Bible studie...

Re: John 3:2 Ῥαββί (רַבִּי) and διδάσκαλος

I'm kind of perplexed. Ῥαββί is just the transliterated form of the Hebrew רַבִּי, which means διδάσκαλος. Actually, רַבִּי means 'My Great one' or 'My Master'; Hebrew for 'Teacher' is מוֹרֶה or מֵבִין. I was going to comment that רב rav means "master" in Hebrew, too. That's also what رَبٌّ rabbun ...

Re: John 2:22 Jesus said the word, or the word and the writing?

"They believed in the Scripture and in the word/message which Jesus spoke."

These are two separate things. Γραφή refers to the Scripture (Law, Prophets and Psalms, as it is called in the NT).

Re: ἄρτι vs νῦν

By the way, I am also studying Hebrew. Isn't אַיֵּה just the feminine form of אֵי? Why would an interrogative particle have a feminine form? Perhaps you mean to ask if it's אֵי with a feminine pronoun attached to it? No, that is not what it is. First off, the ending for feminine pronouns will never...

Re: Translation of: γεγραμμένον

γεγραμμένον --> Verb: Perfect Passive Participle Nominative Singular Neuter Hi. I have a couple of questions about γεγραμμένον. How can γεγραμμένον best be translated to fully incorporate its meaning, and how can it be explained to fully understand its significance as a perfect passive participle? ...

Re: ἄρτι vs νῦν

But why would there be two different words that mean exactly the same thing? Surely there is a slightly different meaning? Why wouldn't an author just use one of them as opposed to using them in different places in the same book to describe things? I can only say that this happens in Hebrew, where ...
