Re: Luke 2:7 - No room at the inn?
Eze 45:4: ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἔσται τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν τοῖς λειτουργοῦσιν ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ καὶ ἔσται τοῖς ἐγγίζουσι λειτουργεῖν τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ ἔσται αὐτοῖς τόπος εἰς οἴκους ἀφωρισμένους τῷ ἁγιασμῷ αὐτῶν So you are saying that it's not a place "for them" but a place "they have"? Perhaps. But that endi...

Luke 2:7 - No room at the inn?
I originally posted this to another forum, but Barry mentioned to me that Stephen Carlson was active here, and that I should repost it on B-Greek to hopefully generate good discussion. Luke 2:7: καὶ ἔτεκεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν πρωτότοκον, καὶ ἐσπαργάνωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέκλινεν αὐτὸν ἐν φάτνῃ, διότι οὐκ ...

Re: Matthew 5:23 in TGNT - say what?
I wanted to post once to mention that I'm enjoying these two threads, and also that it is good to reconnect with Jonathan again, whom I met in Kentucky last year, at the σύνοδος ἑλληνική. Replying to Randall Buth, isn't it interesting that around the time of Justinian[*], new forms of syllable-count...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
Later people read and understand older written material as well as spoken material. But the reverse doesn't work...a modern will understand the old because they know the spelling. The first time that I heard Chaucer read aloud, I was surprised at how much easier it was for me to understand him when...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
κεφάλιον is good for 'chapter.' The diminutive κεφάλιον as opposed to the substantivized adjective κεφάλαιον? On vowel length: one must explain the Great Greek Vowel shift after Alexander, and the dropping of vowel length is the primary culprit and victim. (S. Allen is good on pre-Alexander sound, ...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
Thank you for pointing this out. I had only the word aloud, and had misspelled it. It should be κεφάλαιον. The LSJ gives example usage of κεφάλαιον as "chapter" from Gnomon of the Idios Logos, which would be 2nd century, though I can't find the example usage. The other LSJ citations are fr...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
I had the chance to do a bit of research regarding δέλτος. Apparently I was wrong about the usage. This is all trivial, and perhaps a tangent from the original thread, but I like to correct my mistakes, and it may be interesting on its own account. In the transcript, Rouse's student, who has at this...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
Quite true. You'll find in the introduction to the reader that Rouse is using here, however, that he suggests σελίς in his example instructions to the class. I imagine that he only avoids it in this dialogue because it's third declension, and this is only a few weeks into the course. There are much ...

Re: Your Learning Approach & Pronunciation
Well, I try everything, but the bulk of my practice comes from reading every day. I started with transliterations for the first few months, always reviewing with a plain Greek text and no English aids. These days I often use a Loeb -- I don't know of a faster way to absorb texts. My goal for "a...

Re: Greek and English Dialogues for Use in Schools
I've been going through the Blackie dialogues with a friend during our conversation practice. To be honest, I'm not really at a level where I can benefit from them easily. Ideally, you can become enough of a master of the material to vary the dialogues (using, for example, the provided vocabulary). ...
