Re: Sentence Diagramming

I suggest "phrasing" or what some call "contouring" -- especially for beginners, just being able to recognize which words "go together" has to be a first step in understanding sentences... I just googled Greek phrasing examples and got this good introduction: http://www...

Re: Hello Everyone!

Welcome, James -- there are actually quite a few here who are self-taught in Greek -- tell us a bit about what-all you've done with Greek so far, and how we can help -- e.g. do you have a grammar book? which one? I myself started out with just Strong's back in the early 1990s... it was about 5 years...

Re: phrase from Hippocrates

I was sure I'd thanked y'all for this some time back, but apparently not. thanks so much! I've written the correction into the margin of my book... :-)

phrase from Hippocrates

I'm reading a book called "The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer" by Siddhartha Muherjee. On p. 52 it says: "To clarify this already foggy theory, Galen had borrowed an equally foggy Hippocratic expression, κατ΄ 'ι'ξιυ -- Greek for "straight into" -- to describe...

Re: Grammatical Terms in Greek

" the rosy anecdote from the SBL meetings may simply reflect that those with an interest in the subject are reaching a consensus." that's certainly my sense. I'm guessing that 99% of Biblical Greek I students in North American colleges and seminaries are still learning the word "depon...

Re: ὥρα πατέρος τε καὶ θυγατέρος

I teach OT courses as well as NT and Greek and have long used the varying contexts of Hebrew malach / Greek αγγελος to illustrate the value of trying to read / listen to what the text says while carrying as little angels-in-white-robes-with-wings baggage as possible. I also use Psalm 8:4 (Heb 8:5) w...

Re: KOINE PHRASEBOOK

"speaking a Koine pidgin" -- and teaching "Koine pidgin" or at least highly idiosyncratic Koine to my students -- is my greatest fear and reservation about the whole "teach biblical Greek as if a living language" movement. thanks to all who are pursuing the "commun...

E-Listers at SBL?

Does anyone know whether there is an e-listers get-together planned for the Society of Biblical Literature meeting in Chicago coming up Nov 17-20? It's been a number of years since I've attended SBL... as best I can recall, participants on various Biblical Studies related email lists, including b-gr...

Re: ἐν χριστῷ (Ephesians)

Hi Jeff -- If you're interested in εν χριστω in Ephesians one excellent place to start is all the occurrences of εν χριστω in Ephesians... to try to get a handle on what Paul had in mind and heart, particularly, by his use of this phrase in Ephesians, particularly... Eph 1:1, 3; 2:6, 7, 10, 13; 3:6,...
