Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

I think everyone`s mind is set. I did some more search, some of them might be of interest, without comment, as I think it would be better to come to an end. - Athanasius, Contra Arianos, 43.2,1: „εἰς τοσοῦτον γὰρ ἔφθασαν ἀπονοίας, ὡς καὶ ἐπισκόπους ἐπιχειρεῖν ἀνελεῖν, καὶ ἀνεῖλον ἄν, εἰ μὴ ἐξέφυγον ...

Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

Thanks for your concerns, the English suggestion is a problem for me, not so in German. "Your proposed English translation represents a different understanding of the Greek syntax than what you seem to be arguing for". That could be true. In German the suggestions was (normal Syntax, "...

Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

We disagree, Barry, as a normal function of the infinitive among others is an adverbial, in this suggestion with a final or another debatable force, and as such, very clearly depending on a verb. BRD § 390, Zerwick § 392, BR § 237, Duhoux § 228. Siebenthal (German edition § 220). Examples for verbs ...

Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

Thanks for the interesting answers, you all! To address some concerns: I only know of one translator committee of only one German translation currently debating this verse and if it should be changed, as I heard they are very open to it (Prof. Jantzen/Jettel). I wanted to spot them on this debate, m...

Translation of Phil. 3.16

Dear Biblical-Greeks, In Phil. 3.16 it states (RP, TR, HF etc.): "πλὴν εἰς ὃ ἐφθάσαμεν, τῷ αὐτῷ στοιχεῖν κανόνι, τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν". In some translations the two infinitives στοιχεῖν and φρονεῖν are treated as adhortatives, usually coded by subjunctives ("let us"). E.g. the Darby T...

Re: 1Peter 3,20 force of the prepositional phrase

Dear Barry, thanks. I hope I can reformulate the question by referring to a dictionary (Friberg): διά preposition; I. with the genitive; (1) spatial through, by way of (JN 10.1); (2) temporal; (a) of a whole duration of time through, throughout (LU 5.5); (b) of time within which something takes plac...

Re: 1Peter 3,20 force of the prepositional phrase

It is me again, one additional question: If Peter had constructed the preposition with the accusative, just as the example (Ctesias Fragmenta 1b.565), it would be clearly locally. Isn`t Ctestias a hint, as Peter did it the other way, to treat it as instrumental.

Plausible or not? Thx. P.

Re: 1Peter 3,20 force of the prepositional phrase

dear both of you, thank you for the help! Barry, yes, I need to withdraw that example, it is accusative and so indeed no parallel.
I tend to your solution, maybe I find a real parallel. Thanks for far - at least two statements! Yours peter

1Peter 3,20 force of the prepositional phrase

Dear friends of Greek, I may ask you a tricky (at least for me) question concerning 1Peter 3.20, where it states: ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε, ὅτε ἀπεξεδέχετο ἡ τοῦ θεοῦ μακροθυμία ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε, κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ, εἰς ἣν ὀλίγαι, τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν ὀκτὼ ψυχαί, διεσώθησαν δι᾽ ὕδατος• heretofore disobedient, wh...
